Datong Township, Yilan County
Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area
Bong Bong Train, hot spring, mountain lakes, Giant Tree forest and national treasure, Taiwan Beech, have paved the long track of history of Taipingshan (Peace Mountain) National Forest Recreation Area for over a century.
With an elevation of 1,950 meters, Taipingshan is a forestry legend second only to Alishan. Since 1915, the Japanese started the logging business here, taken over by the nationalist government later on. It thus became the largest forest station in Taiwan, and was ultimately transformed into a recreational area in 1983, leaving precious historical sites such as the Jiancing Historic Trail and Bong Bong Train behind.
Taipingshan was formerly referred to as “Minnao”, meaning a dense and flourishing forest.
Visitors can stroll amidst the virgin forest at the back of Zhen’an Temple, and set free their minds to roam back to the age when Giant Trees stood throughout the mountain. Driving through the Cueifong Forest Road, on which one often encounters wildlife like Taiwan macaque and Mikado Pheasant, you will arrive at the largest mountain lake in Taiwan: Cueifong Lake, at an altitude of 1,840 meters. On the far end of the lake is home to the national treasure, Taiwan Beech. One may take a walk on the 4-km trail in autumn to appreciate the mountain covered in gold.
Not far from the Ticket Station is Jioujhihze Hot Spring, a well-known carbon dioxide spring, another major feature around here. Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area is no doubt the prime choice for any nature lover who pays a visit to Yilan.

Source 宜蘭分署提供
The primitive forest trail was originally a primitive forest park, which is a primitive cypress forest behind Taiping Villa. This primitive cypress forest, which was left behind due to the water source of the villa, has now become an excellent place for forest bathing behind the villa.

The trail is located in the Jiuzhize Scenic Area in the Taipingshan Forest Recreation Area. The trail is connected to the Jiuzhize Hot Spring across the Duowang River and is connected to the Jiuze Bridge. The trail is 2 kilometers long and takes about 2 hours to walk back and forth. The mild climate, abundant rainfall and river valley terrain have nurtured a rich and diverse ecology, and there are complete recreational facilities along the way. The Duowang River crosses the marshland, which is surrounded by mountains and forms a swamp. There are many birds living there, and the sound of birdsong is endless, hence the name.

園區步道
Cuifeng Lake Mountain Trail
Source 宜蘭分署提供
The Cuifeng Lake Mountain Trail surrounds the largest alpine lake in Taiwan. It was built along the route of the former timber transport track and provides a four-season experience of bathing in fresh green in spring, washing away rain and fog in summer, admiring red leaves in autumn, and watching white snow in winter. Cuifeng Lake is 1,840 meters above sea level. During the rainy season, the lake surface reaches 25 hectares. It is the largest alpine lake in Taiwan, with a myriad of changes in the morning and evening, and different styles in each season.

園區步道
Hemlock Forest Nature Trail
Source 宜蘭分署提供
The Hemlock Forest Nature Trail is located in the transition zone between coniferous forest and broad-leaved forest at medium altitude. Due to its high terrain and facing the ocean current, water vapor condenses and is filled with clouds and mist all year round, just like a fairyland on earth. It is also the water source of Taipingshan Villa. It takes about 2.5 hours to go back and forth. Along the way, there are towering ancient trees, lush vegetation that blocks out the sun, and the air is thick. The entrance of the trail is behind the primitive forest park above Taipingshan Villa, so you must pass the 400-step central staircase of the villa. Both sides are planted with purple-leaf maples that turn red all year round. It is a beautiful red path.

園區步道
Taiwan Beech Trail
Source 宜蘭分署提供
Located next to Cuifeng Mountain House in Taipingshan Forest Recreation Area, Yilan County, the round trip takes about 3 hours. Along the way, you can observe animal ecology, slate rock walls, green mosses, red cypress forests, Cryptomeria forests, mountain cherry forests, as well as milestones, workers' huts, switches and other railway cultural relics. At the end of the trail, you can enjoy Taiwan's largest area of virgin beech forest, which covers 1,100 hectares. In spring, it sprouts fresh green, in summer, it is lush green, in autumn, the leaves are golden, and in winter, the leaves fall and the branches are dry. The scenery of each season is different and each has its own charm.

園區步道
Jianqing Nostalgic Trail
Source 宜蘭分署提供
The Jianqing Nostalgic Trail is built from the renovation of part of the "Jianqing Line Timber Track" on Taiping Mountain. The entrance is located at the 23rd kilometer of the Yizhuan Line on Taiping Mountain. When the sky clears up after the rain, you can see the Lanyang Plain and the majestic Shengling Line in the distance; there are often magnificent and poetic seas of clouds in the afternoon. Sometimes, after being trapped in the white fog for a long time, you will feel a longing for clear weather, which is the origin of the place name "Jianqing". The Jianqing Line Timber Track was originally about 5.5 kilometers long, and it was next to the winding railway path. The view was wide and the path was gentle. Along the way, historical traces such as railways, wooden horses, trolley axles, and remains of workers' huts were preserved.

園區步道
Maoxing Nostalgic Trail
Source 宜蘭分署提供
The Maoxing Nostalgic Trail starts at the Maoxing Platform Station of the Taipingshan Bungee Tram. It is renovated along the old Bungee Tramway with a gentle slope and complete rest facilities and guide signs. This "ancient timber transport track" built during the Japanese colonial period winds through the forests of red cypress, cypress, and cryptomeria. The trail is lined with small trees, ferns, and ground cover plants that tolerate moisture and shade. It passes through the forest, around the mountain wall, and across the stream. The quaint rails and remains of the workers' huts bear witness to the years when Taipingshan was rich in trees.

園區步道
Wangyang Mountain Trai
Source 宜蘭分署提供
The entrance to the Wangyang Mountain Trail is located behind Cuifeng Mountain House. It is 1.2 kilometers long and takes about 1.5 hours to walk back and forth. When you climb up Wangyang Mountain, you can not only see the Lanyang Plain in the distance when the weather is clear, but also the Guishan Island in the Pacific Ocean can be clearly seen.

Featured Landscape
Cueifong Lake
Source 宜蘭分署
Cueifong Lake is the largest alpine lake in Taiwan, extending over 25 hectares when filled by the autumn rains. During the dry season, the lake recedes to a gourd shape, the edges of which are green with water plants. The view becomes even more attractive in spring when the wildflowers bloom. In late autumn to early winter, the lake attracts wintering birds from the north, their calls adding to the chorus of the already vociferous resident species. When the mist and fog spread over the water's surface, visitors might easily feel as if they have stepped into a fairytale scene. The lakeside area is currently off limits to visitors due to ecological restoration work. However, visitors may still enjoy the view from the observation platform and along the Cueifong Lake and Taiwan Beech trails. The latter is especially beautiful in mid-November when the trees don their autumn hues.

Featured Landscape
Bailing Giant Tree
The most famous tourist attraction here is a giant tree. Bailing giant tree is a gigantic Taiwan Cypress about 30 m high (roughly 10 floors) and more than 2,500 years old. It takes 6 persons to encircle its trunk. It had been struck by lightning and its trunk is hollow inside. Even so, it is still alive and continuing to grow. By the way, Bailing is also the demarcation between broadleaf trees and conifer trees.

In 2004, more construction had been undertaken and the road was renamed “Cueifong Scenic Road”. It is the only road to Cueifong Lake, National Taiwan Beech Trail and Cueifong Villa

On the Bong Bong train, you can find various wild flowers, like Gleichenia japonica, Unigemmate China Fern and Common Foxglove, swung in the wind on your right and a broad view of mountains on your left. Both in good weather and in foggy days, the views you see from the Bong Bong Train are like picturesque paintings.
