Heping District, Taichung City
Wuling National Forest Recreation Area
Hidden deep inside Wuling Farm, the hymn of the forest composed with red maples, pine forest, waterfalls, and Taiwan Landlocked Masu Salmon, captures the most fascinating image of Wuling National Forest Recreation Area.
This is the third national forest recreational area in Taiwan, and about a 4-hour drive from Taipei. The elevation is approximately 1,800 meters. Due to the cold air descending from the high mountains, the temperature here is colder than one might think. The most representative scenic spot is perhaps the magnificent “Taoshan Waterfall” at the end of the Taoshan Trail, veiled behind the astonishing mist created by the fall.
Taoshan Trail is also the entry point to Taoshan and Chihyoushan, two of the 100 Peaks of Taiwan. The Taiwan Red Pines spread along the trail make a brilliant scenic tour. The rich ecology is also one of the main features: Formosan Muntjac, Taiwan macaque, Mikado Pheasant, Swinhoe’s Pheasant and Vinaceous Rosefinch are common dwellers here. Standing and looking down from the Wuling Suspension Bridge, you’ll also be able to see live national treasures in the Cijiawan River, the Taiwan Landlocked Masu Salmon! The Taiwan Red Maple and Green Maple in autumn, as well as cherry blossoms in spring, are the splendid seasonal wonders of Wuling National Forest Recreation Area that one should not miss when visiting Wuling!

Wuling Suspension Bridge to Taoshan Waterfall
Source 郭育任攝
The main landscapes are mountains, waterfalls, streams and forests. The Wuling Suspension Bridge spans the lush greenery on both sides of the river, and the stream under the bridge is crystal clear, attracting many tourists to stop and watch and take photos. The height from the suspension bridge to the waterfall is about 50 meters. Although the amount of water is not large, it is graceful and orderly. Because the waterfall is located within the valley line, it is a semi-enclosed space, so the view from the vicinity is relatively small. This section of the road is characterized by its quietness and beauty, and is also a famous bird-watching route. The distance from the villa to the waterfall is about 4 kilometers long, with an altitude difference of about 400 meters.

Qijiawan Creek

The Qijiawan River, which originates from Taoshan, is a tributary of the Dajia River. It is famous for its unique Taiwan cherry landlocked salmon. The Taiwan landlocked salmon is a living fossil left over from the Ice Age. It is a migratory fish. Due to several glacial cycles and the impact of crustal movements, the terrain changed and it was unable to migrate. It gradually became a landlocked salmon. It likes to live in clear waters with a water temperature of about 10 to 15 degrees. This natural living environment is only found in the Qijiawan River in the upper reaches of the Dajia River in Taiwan. It is forbidden to enter Qijiawan Creek. If you want to see it, you have to go to the Fish Viewing Platform. There is a high embankment and a stream so clear that you can see the bottom, and if you see any fish swimming by, you can see it clearly. Looking down at it from Wuling Bridge, I was moved.

Taoshan Waterfall

Taoshan Waterfall, located at the deepest part of Taoshan Trail, is about 80 meters long and is one of the sources of Qijiawan Creek. There is abundant water all year round. The water pours down from a high place, and the hazy water vapor floats everywhere. In addition, there is the sound of water galloping like thousands of horses. Dozens of meters away, you can feel the splashing water like smoke and fog, so it is named "Smoke Sound Waterfall". Visit the waterfall and forest trails in the morning, stop at Wuling Bridge to appreciate the leisurely swimming posture of Taiwan cherry landlocked salmon, or listen to the birds singing, which is enough to make you forget the hustle and bustle.
