Alishan Township, Chiayi County

Alishan National Forest Recreation Area

Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, with its forest railways, Sacred Trees, sea of clouds, sunrise, and cherry blossoms, is the most famous and popular forest recreational area in Taiwan. It is a brilliant jadeite shinning on the Alishan Mountain Range.
You may take the renowned mountain touring forest railway at TRA Chiayi Station, slowly make your way to the terminal station Alishan Station (the forest railway’s main line currently operates between Chiayi and Fenqihu only, not fully operational yet) while enjoying the marvelous landscape of forest. You can also drive via the Provincial Highway No. 18, which will take you to Alishan National Forest Recreational Area at the 88.2k marker with an elevation of 2216 meters in less than two hours.

The Alishan Mountain Range is one of the Top Five Mountain Ranges in Taiwan. Alishan (Ali Mountain) is not just a mountain, but the name for the entire mountain area. Rich in Taiwan Red Cypress and Taiwan Yellow Cypress ever since the ancient times, Alishan became the largest forest area in 1912 until the end of 1960s. The primitive cypress forests almost die out after the logging by the Japanese and the nationalist government. Only some 40 Giant Red Cypress beside the Giant-tree Plant Walk-1 and -2 survived to date for us to remember the majestic forest of Sacred Trees back in the day. “Alishan Sianglin Sacred Tree”, with a height of 45 meters and a circumference of 12.3 meters, approximately 2300 years old, is the tallest of all and a stop visitors to Alishan should never miss.
There is a rich ecology in Alishan National Forest Recreational Area. In particular, the most unique species among the flora are the rare Oleandra wallichii, Huperzia somae, Alishan Mahonia, and Taiwan Pleione. As for those of fauna, there are Taiwan macaque, Mikado Pheasant as well as the little stars like Steere's Liocichla, Collared Bush Robin, and Alisan's Salamander. A vibrant ecosystem it is.
Aside from the Sacred Tree, there are lots of attractions worthy of visiting: Alishan Forest Railways, the ethereal Sister Ponds, the magnificent sea of clouds, the splendid Chushan Sunrise, Shouzhen Temple, Hundred-year-old Ciyun Temple, the historical sites of forestry, the various flowers such as cherry blossoms and rhododendron in the spring time, and so on and so forth. Alishan National Forest Recreational Area is an international-level tourist attraction that represents the cloud forest belt in Taiwan, welcoming tourists around the world to come to learn about the rich and beautiful mountains and forests in Taiwan.

This is also the earliest trail leading from Ciyuen Temple to Shenben. If you take a walk in the evening and see the afterglow of the sunset, the golden sea of clouds and the dancing waves are a beautiful sight. The tall and handsome Taiwan fir next to Ciyuen Temple is also not to be missed. Among the trees in Taiwan, Taiwan is named after the genus Taiwan, and there is only one species in the genus Taiwan fir. It is a specialty of Taiwan and a living fossil left over from the third century, which is extremely precious.

Alishan's New Eight Scenic Spots - Alishan Sacred Tree Relics

In November 1906, the Japanese discovered a giant red cypress tree near the present-day "Shenmu" station. The tree was 50 meters tall and 25 meters around at chest height. They revered it as a sacred tree. In 1914, the entire Alishan Forest Railway was opened to traffic. The towering Alishan sacred trees and the forest train passing through are almost the spiritual symbol of Alishan and have become a Taiwanese landmark known both at home and abroad. In 1953, the sacred tree of Alishan was unfortunately struck by lightning and burned, causing serious damage; on June 7, 1956, the sacred tree was struck by lightning again, and the inside of the trunk caught fire, eventually causing it to burn to death. In June 1997, due to continuous heavy rains in the mountainous area, the Alishan sacred tree collapsed at 10:05 am on July 1 due to excessive water load and loose soil. One-third of the tree trunk fell onto the railway, and the other two-thirds remained in place. Regarding how to deal with the Alishan sacred trees that have not fallen, the Forestry and Conservation Department invited experts, scholars and the public to participate in the discussion. After three large-scale questionnaire surveys and full discussions at public hearings held by legislators, it was decided to launch a series of sacred tree nostalgia and final placement activities. On June 29, 1998, the sacred tree was felled under the focused gaze of respect and reluctance from all walks of life, allowing the Alishan sacred tree to return to the embrace of nature. On the same day, a red cypress sapling was planted in the original place to carry forward the spirit of the Alishan sacred tree that symbolizes its endless vitality.

Tashan is 2,663 meters above sea level. The geology of Tashan is very special. It is composed of sandstone, shale and sandstone shale of relatively young geological age. The rock joints are clearly layered, like layers of ancient towers. The cliffs form rugged rocks and natural caves everywhere. Rainwater penetrates the rocks and ravines, hangs on the walls and flies into the air, like a curtain of golden beads, which is a spectacular sight. Tashan is divided into "Little Tashan" and "Big Tashan". The same mountain range extends eastward. When viewed from the recreation area, the highest point is a large piece of protruding bare rock. According to legend, the indigenous Tsou tribe regards Data Mountain as a sacred mountain, where the souls of their ancestors reside and rest, and it is sacred and inviolable. Although the Alishan area is their traditional hunting ground, the tribesmen will never go near Datang Mountain to offend their ancestors.

Sisters Pond consists of two pools, one large and one small. In the sister pond, the roots of large cypress trees that have been cut down are used as the foundation to stand on the water surface. Two Acacia Pavilions are built in between. There is a wooden bridge outside that connects to the shore. The bridge is 15 meters long. The water in the pond is clear and calm. It is full in summer and dry in winter. The red cypress forest on the right was formed by natural seeding. The wooden plank road around the lake is 180 meters long. Walking through the cypress forest, you can enjoy the reflection of Sister Pond in the water and the beautiful scenery of the lake and mountains.

Alishan, with an altitude of more than 2,000 meters, is located in Taiwan's fog forest belt. It is surrounded by clouds and mist all year round, with an annual rainfall of more than 4,000 mm. The abundant rainfall nourishes the thousand-year-old giant trees in Alishan. Alishan can be said to be the hometown of cypress. In order to continue the tenacious vitality of the "Alishan Sacred Tree", the Forestry and Conservation Administration, Chiayi County Government, and Tourism Bureau jointly organized the "Alishan Second Generation Sacred Tree - Who Will Compete Voting Event" in 2006. According to the results of the voting, this giant tree received the most votes. The tree species is red cypress, majestic and upright. It is the big brother giant tree in the fragrant cypress forest of Alishan. It deserves to be selected. This sacred tree is located next to Ciyun Temple in Xianglin Village, Alishan Township, Chiayi County. At the beginning of the new year (January 1, 2007), it was renamed "Alishan Xianglin Sacred Tree" with historical heritage significance. Everyone is welcome to come to Alishan to take photos with it.

The Zhuoping area was originally the early timber production center of Alishan, and its employees' families formed a settlement. On November 9, 1976, the Zhuoping fire burned down the old houses. It was later planned as a natural park. The park trails run through and many Rosaceae plants are planted, including Western apples, pears, plum blossoms, weeping crabapples, etc. The renovation project began in 2011, shaping the entrance image, adjusting the trail line, beautifying the surrounding area with green plants, and designing a pavilion with a sloping roof and Japanese bungalow structure. The highest cherry blossom path in Taiwan was established, providing an accessible high-altitude plank road for people with disabilities. The terminal platform can appreciate the magnificent Tashan, the elegant cedar treetops, and overlook the vast sea of cherry blossoms from the air, so that visitors to Nuohira Park can appreciate the beauty of cherry blossoms from different angles both under the trees and on the trees. In addition, 15 contemporary Taiwanese poets such as Yu Guangzhong and Zheng Chouyu were invited to write about Alishan, and their works were included as park attractions and arranged as the Alishan Poetry Path.

The second control post on Zhushan Forest Road controls vehicles entering the park, and only tour vehicles and staff vehicles holding passes are allowed to pass. People with limited mobility (who use wheelchairs, assistive devices, etc. and are clearly identifiable) can, after prior approval, go to the second control post to exchange for a temporary pass with relevant documents such as a vehicle registration permit and driver's license.
