Neidong National Forest Recreation Area
The small yet exquisite Neidong National Forest Recreation Area is a fern paradise situated at the upstream of Nanshih Creek, a great place for one to enjoy the greenery and serenity.
About 50 minutes from Xindian, Neidong is perhaps the most convenient national forest recreational area for the Greater Taipei area in terms of traffic. Located at an elevation between 230 to 800 meters, it is warm and humid with Neidong Creek flowing through, making it a true paradise for ferns: one will find up to 65 species of ferns merely along the short Waterfall Viewing Trail, including the rare Weeping Phlegmariurus and Lomariopsis cochinchinensis. All of these are delicate guests clinging onto tree trunks. Neidou used be referred to as “Wawa Valley”, thanks to the echoes of an army of frogs croaking at night in the valley. In fact, you may find frogs in the trench beside the trail!
Neidong Waterfall is the hotspot of the Recreation Area. It is at the end of the Waterfall Viewing Trail, bringing multiple enjoyments to the visitors with three different layers of landscapes and refreshing anions. Why not leave behind the muggy city during the hot summer days, and take a cooling afternoon forest bath at Neidong Forest Recreation Area!

Soon after entering the main trail, you will find a waterfall viewing platform from which you can overlook the Wusha Creek Waterfall. The Wushaxi Waterfall, located in the middle reaches of Nanshixi River, is hidden in the forest. The water flows gracefully. Although it is not a waterfall with a large amount of water, it also has a unique flavor. Here, you can stop for a while to admire the beauty of the waterfall, read the explanation on the interpretation board, and start your Neidong journey into the inner cave.

Taipower Luohao Dam
Source 新竹分署
The name "Luohao" comes from the Atayal language "Rahau", which means "dense forest" in the Atayal language, which is the general name for the area near Xinxian Township. Therefore, the dam located here is named "Luohao". Luohao Dam is located in the middle reaches of Nanshi River. It diverts water through a 4.8-kilometer tunnel and sends it to the Wulai Power Plant together with the water from Ayu Dam. It uses the more than 80-meter height difference between the two places to generate hydroelectric power. It is a small hydroelectric power plant in northern Taiwan. Luohao Dam was built in 1947. The original design used a stream-type concrete diversion dam. Later, because Taipower Company needed to cooperate with peak power generation, an arc gate was added to the top of the dam in 1963. When you come here, you can see the facilities related to hydroelectric power generation and understand the principles of hydroelectric power generation.

Neidong Creek is a small tributary of the middle and upper reaches of Nanshi Creek. The terrain changes a lot as it flows from east to west, the slope is steep, and the water flows rapidly. Where it merges with Nanshi Creek, the slope of the Neidong Creek riverbed becomes continuously steeper, and three layers of waterfalls can be seen. It is rich in negative ions, ranking first among all the stream waterfalls in Taiwan in terms of negative ions.
