Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area
When it comes to snow and high mountains, Hehuanshan is no doubt the prime choice of Taiwanese people; they also capture the unique image of Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area.
Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area is the very first national forest recreational area in Taiwan, established as early as 1963, thanks to its extraordinary scenery and alpine ecosystem. You can find a vast field of Yushan Cane up here, experience the chilling temperature 18 degrees Celsius lower than that on the plain, and access three renowned peaks out of the 100 Peaks of Taiwan: Hehuanshan Main Peak, Hehuanshan East Peak, as well as Shimenshan. You can stay in Song Syue Lodge to witness the marvelous starry sky at night. There are birds which can only be seen at high altitude: Alpine Accentor, Vinaceous Rosefinch, Taiwan Firecrest, and so forth, waiting for you to pay a visit!
The snowy scene is one huge feature of Hehuanshan, for such a winter snow scene is the most captivating dream-like picture for subtropical Taiwan. In May, the splendid ocean of Mori Rhododendron blossoms decorates the green mountain with reds and whites, as if it were snowing again. Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area is a place that demonstrates its brilliance during all four seasons, and takes your breath away.

Hehuan East Peak Trail

Hehuan East Peak is 3,421 meters above sea level. It happens to be located at the junction of Nantou County and Hualien County. The entrance to the trail is near Hehuan Mountain Villa at 33 kilometers on Provincial Highway 14A. The trail is 1,056 meters long and relatively steep. The boundaries between the mountains and forests are clear. The Yushan arrow bamboo forms a grassy slope landscape, and the Taiwan fir forest is in the leeward part of the valley. The trail has distinct scenery in each of the four seasons. Wild flowers bloom in spring, the summer is green, the autumn is bleak, and the winter is covered with snow. The scenery is different in each season. The Yushan azalea population is most concentrated along the Hehuan East Peak trail. Every May and June, the pink sea of flowers embellishes the mountaintops with colorful flowers. In the past, there was a ski training ground on the east side of the East Peak, where the slope was relatively gentle, so abandoned cable car transfer stations can be seen along the trail.

Hehuanjianshan Trail

Hehuan Mountain was originally a hunting ground for the Atayal people, desolate and secluded. In 1956, the Central Cross-Island Highway Wushe to Dayuling branch line was built. Due to its unique topography and high traffic accessibility, it has become the most famous snow viewing spot in Taiwan. In addition to the snow season, the alpine scenery and cold temperate climate of Hehuan Mountain are also a popular place for viewing and summer vacation. In addition, it is the gateway to the Hehuan Peaks and Qilai Peaks, making it the best area for mountaineering activities. The Hehuan Mountain National Forest Recreation Area trail group is located at the junction of Ren'ai Township, Nantou County and Xiulin Township, Hualien County. It is the source of Dajia River, Liwu River, and Zhuoshui River. With the opening of the Central Cross-Island Highway Wushe branch line, the Hehuan Peaks have become a suburban mountain route that can be climbed without heavy equipment. The Hehuan Peaks mainly include the Hehuan Main Peak, East Peak, West Peak, North Peak, Shimen Mountain, and Hehuanjianshan trails.
