Shoufong Township, Hualien County
Chihnan National Forest Recreation Area
If you are into exploring history, then Chihnan National Forest Recreation Area is a place you should not miss: old locomotives, yarders, as well as the vintage photographs and countless artifacts in the Forestry Exhibition Hall sit in the small Recreation Area beside Hualien’s Liyu Lake, epitomizing the 60s.
Chihnan is the starting point of one of the three legends in the forestry history of Hualien: Halunshan Mountain Railway. It was a glorious forestry railroad empire that spanned about 50 km in length in Hualien, planned by the Japanese and expanded by the nationalist government. The total ban of logging came into force in 1989, Halun Work Station was shut down and cut off from the world. Only the Chihnan Work Station survived as a forest recreational area for people to remember the days of forestry.
In addition to history, there are woods in Chihnan as well, primarily of Moraceae and Lauraceae mixed with reforestation species such as Formosan Ash. Birds endemic to Eastern Taiwan, such as Formosan Bubul, can often be sighted here, which makes it an excellent choice for people to get close to nature. Come to Chihnan National Forest Recreation Area, and appreciate the transformation, as well as the prospects of forestry management in different contexts and times amidst the ambiance of history and forest phytoncide.

Entering the forest recreation area, you will first come to the "Forestry Exhibition Hall". The information desk provides tourist-related consulting services, and the multimedia playback is adjusted from time to time according to tourist needs to play an introduction to the recreation area. The first floor introduces the changes in forest altitudes and forest phases, animal and plant ecology, and parent-child interactive games. The second floor mainly uses the multifunctional uses of the forest to present it. From the second floor of the exhibition hall, you can also overlook Liyu Lake. Steam skidder
Source 花蓮分署
Manufactured by Taiwan Corporation in 1941, it is a three-reel skidder with a vertical boiler and wood as fuel. It has a total weight of 26 metric tons and a maximum horsepower of 85 horsepower. However, due to its heavy parts, it was difficult and time-consuming to move, and it consumed a lot of materials. It was later replaced by a diesel engine and was used in the Lintianshan Forest Farm of the Mugua Branch from 1941 to 1973.

Timber ropeway
Source 花蓮分署
The "ropeway", also known as the "cage", is the most economical and practical type of timber transportation equipment among many important timber production equipment in Taiwan's early days. It goes directly to the steep mountains in the shortest distance. Not only is the construction cost low, but the installation will not affect soil and water conservation. From Chinan to Mugua Mountain at an altitude of 2,500 meters, the logging site has five sections of cableways and timber transport vehicles (bumper cars). This cableway is the first section of the cableway with a slant distance of 1,495 meters and a height difference of 687 meters. The slope is 27 degrees and 30 minutes. The timber transport capacity is 3 cubic meters each time. It was built in November 1959 and retired in 1987 (28 years in use).
